Jean Chaffee is the widow of former Fresno Zoo director, Dr. Paul Chaffee. He often shared interesting stories about the zoo's animals. After his death, Jean spent five years researching the animals at the Chaffee Zoo. She wrote the books because she feels these stories should be shared and enjoyed as a part of history.
Being an educator for 28 years, Jean understands what attracts children to books. The stories are full of animal sounds, expressions, and interactive opportunities. Ernie Hergenroeder is a professional illustrator. His beautifully colored pages make the stories come alive. Ernie also grew up in Fresno and went to the zoo to see his favorite animal, Nosey.
In her spare time, Jean volunteers as a zoo docent. Among her many zoo activities, she leads tours, handles raptors (owls, hawks, and kestrels), and gives talks throughout the valley to civic organizations, schools, and local groups.
Jean loves to travel and has visited over 50 countries.
Her four young grandchildren are avid fans of the zoo, of course.
Mrs. Chaffee has become a very popular presenter to school children throughout the San Joaquin Valley. She is available for school presentations and group talks. Her talks are filled with true funny stories about the animals at the Chaffee Zoo. She entertains children and encourages reading for ages pre-school through 6th grade.
